This medication is effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease, especially erosive esophagitis and preventing recurrence, and can be used to improve symptoms even in the absence of esophagitis. It also aids in the treatment and prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It alleviates gastrointestinal pain and discomfort associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and is also used for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It is effective in treating Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and preventing rebleeding from gastric ulcers or duodenal ulcers, hence widely used in the treatment and prevention of various diseases of the stomach, esophagus, and duodenum.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients allergic to this medication or its components, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to benzimidazoles. Patients allergic to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics among the antibiotics used for eradication of Helicobacter pylori should also avoid using this drug. Patients taking certain medications that may pose risks when combined with this drug, such as terfenadine, cisapride, pimozide, astemizole, atazanavir, nelfinavir, or rilpivirine-containing medications, should not be treated with this drug. It is also safer for breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Patients with a history of myocardial infarction should avoid using this medication. This drug may cause various side effects such as headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, myalgia, and hypomagnesemia. Special attention is required if hypomagnesemia occurs due to the risk of serious electrolyte abnormalities or arrhythmias. Regular monitoring is needed during prolonged use, and there may be a slightly increased risk of gastrointestinal infections. This medication may also interact with other drugs, so if taking other medications, consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Due to limited safety data on this drug during pregnancy, it should be used with caution, and it is advised not to use during breastfeeding. In case of overdose, as there are no specific antidotes, appropriate treatment according to symptoms is required, and it should be kept out of reach of children.

Serious side effects

Urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, shock, jaundice, hepatitis, liver failure, severe cutaneous adverse reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell syndrome), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome), interstitial nephritis, severe edema, severe allergic reactions, severe skin adverse reactions, respiratory distress, asthma attacks, chest pain, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis.

Mild side effects

Headache, dizziness, sensory disturbance, drowsiness, taste disturbance, blurred vision, bronchospasm, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, stomatitis, gastrointestinal candidiasis, elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, dermatitis, itching, rash, hair loss, photosensitivity, fractures, arthralgia, myalgia, muscle weakness, interstitial nephritis, gynecomastia, asthenia, increased sweating, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, allergic reactions, back pain, chest pain.
