This medication is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia to effectively lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglycerides, and to raise HDL cholesterol levels. Therefore, it helps improve risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual initial dose is 1 to 2 milligrams of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dosage may be increased to a maximum of 4 milligrams per day. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be used in patients with allergies to this drug, those with impaired liver function, patients with severe hepatic impairment, those taking cyclosporine, patients with muscle disorders, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children. Additionally, patients with renal impairment or a history of liver dysfunction, excessive alcohol consumption, those with hypothyroidism or a history of muscle-related disorders, as well as elderly individuals should exercise special caution when using this medication. During the course of taking this medication, unusual symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, abdominal pain, rash, and itching may occur, and liver function test levels may rise, thus requiring regular monitoring of liver function. Rarely, thrombocytopenia, central nervous system symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal function abnormalities, and endocrine changes may occur, so if any unusual symptoms occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. This medication may cause serious side effects when taken with certain drugs; therefore, caution should be exercised, especially when used in conjunction with cyclosporine, fibrate medications, niacin, or erythromycin, and if necessary, either avoid combination use or follow medical guidelines. Elderly patients may experience increased side effects due to decreased physical function, so caution is necessary during use. Pregnant or nursing mothers should not take this medication as it may affect the fetus or baby, and if pregnancy is confirmed, administration should be immediately discontinued. For children, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established, so it is not used. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and the pharmaceuticals should be kept in their original container to prevent misuse or deterioration in quality.
