Precautions

This drug is used as a local anesthetic and may cause a rare blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia. This condition reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, possibly causing the skin to take on a bluish hue or, in severe cases, leading to problems in the central nervous system and heart. Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital methemoglobinemia, heart or lung diseases, infants under 6 months of age, and those using specific oxidizing agents should exercise extra caution. While using this drug, one must closely monitor for symptoms and signs of methemoglobinemia, and if symptoms appear, usage must be immediately stopped and treatment sought. Additionally, this drug should not be used on individuals with hypersensitivity to it, in areas with wounds or dermatitis, in infants under 3 months, and in infants under 12 months or premature infants who are taking specific medications. Anemia, frail patients, elderly individuals, and those with liver diseases should use with caution, and precaution is necessary if allergic to any of the components of this drug. When applied to the skin, temporary pallor, redness, swelling, burning sensation, itching, local sensitization reactions, numbness, and skin irritation may occur, and rarely, severe allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock may happen. It may cause irritation if it comes in contact with the eyes, so it should not be applied around the eyes; if contact occurs, it should be rinsed immediately with clean water. The toxicity may be increased when this drug is used with other local anesthetics or certain medications, so caution is advised during concomitant use. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use it cautiously after consulting with a doctor, and it should be used restrictively in children, especially infants under 3 months. Overdosage may lead to symptoms of methemoglobinemia or adverse effects on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system, therefore, the dosage must be strictly followed, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. Finally, it is advisable to avoid prolonged or high-dose usage of this drug, and if any adverse reactions or suspicious symptoms occur during use, immediate consultation with a specialist should be sought.
