Improvement of cholesterol and lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and mixed hyperlipidemia
This medication is used in conjunction with diet to lower elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly heterozygous familial and non-familial, as well as in those with mixed hyperlipidemia. It is administered to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other treatments are ineffective or additional therapy is required. Additionally, this drug helps manage lipid levels in patients at high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. It is essential to use this medication along with an appropriate diet and to first confirm and manage any influence from other health conditions or medications. Regular monitoring of lipid levels before and after treatment is necessary to evaluate effectiveness and adjust as needed. In summary, this medication is employed to improve various types of cholesterol levels associated with hypercholesterolemia and to protect vascular health.
This medication should be taken once daily in the evening, regardless of meals. For patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosing range is from 10/10mg to 10/40mg per day, and the generally recommended initial dose is 10/20mg daily. Patients with less need for LDL cholesterol reduction may start with 10/10mg per day. Lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than 4 weeks after starting or adjusting the dosage.
This medication is primarily used to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Care should be taken for muscle-related adverse symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness while taking this medication; if such symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately. The risk of serious muscle damage, including myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, increases particularly when taken at high doses or in conjunction with certain medications. Patients with active liver disease or abnormally high liver enzyme levels should not take this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid this medication, and women of childbearing age should only take it after confirming the possibility of pregnancy. This medication should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as specific antifungal agents, antibiotics, or antiviral medications, due to increased risk of side effects. Furthermore, it should also be avoided in combination with medications like gemfibrozil, cyclosporine, danazol, and fusidic acid. Caution is necessary for elderly patients, those with decreased kidney function, and patients with hypothyroidism while taking this medication. Regular monitoring of liver function and muscle condition during treatment is recommended, and any adverse symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. This medication contains lactose, and patients with lactose intolerance should not take it. Lastly, it is crucial to inform healthcare providers about this medication when being prescribed new drugs during treatment.
