This medication is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive reflux esophagitis related to it. It also helps in the long-term maintenance therapy to alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis and prevent recurrence of esophagitis. It is also used in the treatment and prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. It is effective in treating gastrointestinal symptoms occurring during non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, related gastric ulcers, and for the prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is used for the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and for maintenance therapy to prevent rebleeding from gastric and duodenal ulcers. Overall, it aids in improving various symptoms and conditions related to gastrointestinal diseases.

Additionally, this medication can lower blood magnesium levels, so routine testing of magnesium levels is necessary for long-term users.
