Treatment and prevention of gastroesophageal reflux disease (e.g., erosive reflux esophagitis), treatment and prevention of Helicobacter pylori-positive peptic ulcer, and relief of gastrointestinal symptoms related to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
This medication is used for long-term maintenance therapy in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and to prevent recurrence of erosive reflux esophagitis. It is also effective as part of antibiotic combination therapy for the treatment and prevention of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It is utilized for the short-term treatment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms associated with NSAID use and for the treatment and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers that may occur with continuous NSAID use. Additionally, it is used for maintenance therapy to prevent rebleeding caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastric or duodenal ulcers. It is a medication that helps improve treatment efficacy for various gastrointestinal diseases.
This medication should be swallowed whole with liquid such as water and not chewed or crushed. 1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist or are not treated, continue for an additional 4 weeks. - Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence: 20 mg once daily. - Symptomatic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis: once daily.
Adolescents aged 12 and older 1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist or are not treated, an additional 4 weeks of treatment.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those allergic to this medication or its components or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to benzimidazoles should not take it. Caution is also needed for those allergic to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics when used in combination with this medication. Particularly, patients taking certain heart-related medications, nursing women, and those receiving certain antiviral medications should avoid using this medication. Various side effects may occur with this medication, the most common being headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Rarely, serious side effects such as blood cell count reduction, allergic reactions, liver function abnormalities, and skin rashes may occur, so consultation with a doctor is required immediately if symptoms appear. Long-term use may lead to an electrolyte imbalance known as hypomagnesemia, so regular blood tests are important. Moreover, since this medication inhibits gastric acid secretion, there may be a slightly increased risk of gastric infections, and if diarrhea persists, healthcare providers should be informed. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers about other medications being taken. Special caution is advised when combined with anticoagulants, antiviral medications, or certain antibiotics. Pregnant or nursing women should consult with a doctor before taking this medication, and it is recommended that breastfeeding mothers do not take it. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so seek appropriate treatment immediately at a medical facility. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and should be stored in its original packaging.
Urticaria, angioedema, anaphylactic reaction, shock, severe allergic reactions, hypomagnesemia (severe), hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, hepatitis, jaundice, liver failure, encephalopathy, mucocutaneous syndrome (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), erythema multiforme, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, angioedema, eosinophilia, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome), interstitial nephritis, rhabdomyolysis.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication may be sensitive to air or moisture, so it must be stored in a tightly sealed container. It is advisable to maintain storage temperatures between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the medication's efficacy over time.
