This medication is used for various gastrointestinal disorders including gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also administered prior to surgery to prevent Mendelson's syndrome during anesthesia and is effective in treating ulcers that may occur post-surgery, as well as ulcers induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). By inhibiting gastric acid secretion, this medication helps improve symptoms and aids in the treatment of these conditions.

How to take

Generally taken orally, 2 tablets twice a day, regardless of meals, in the morning and before bedtime. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers 2 tablets are administered twice daily or 4 tablets once at bedtime. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease Take 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks or 4 tablets once at bedtime. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Start with an initial dose of 2 tablets three times daily for treatment.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or those with impaired kidney function. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to this medication or its ingredients, those with acute porphyria, patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, premature infants and newborns, as well as patients on a potassium-restricted diet should not be treated with this medication. Patients with liver dysfunction, those with a history of drug allergies, elderly patients, individuals with a history of kidney impairment, and those concomitantly using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use this medication with caution. Care must be taken prior to use in patients over middle age with new or changed symptoms of dyspepsia as it may obscure symptoms of gastric cancer. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection with gastric or duodenal ulcers require eradication therapy, and critically ill patients in intensive care or those with hypophosphatemia and patients with swallowing difficulties should be monitored closely. Serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur during treatment, so if symptoms arise, administration should be immediately discontinued and appropriate treatment sought. If hypersensitivity reactions occur such as skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, fever, bronchospasm, hypotension, or chest pain, medication should be stopped. Rarely, blood tests may show decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets, or elevated serum enzyme levels, and if there is systemic malaise, subcutaneous bleeding, or fever, medical advice should be sought immediately. As liver dysfunction may occur, treatment should be discontinued if jaundice or signs of hepatitis are evident. Cardiovascular side effects such as arrhythmias or vasculitis have also been reported very rarely. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and changes in stool color may occur, but no special treatment is needed for this. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, mental confusion, seizures, insomnia, and headaches may occur rarely, and if any abnormal symptoms appear, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Endocrine symptoms such as gynecomastia, galactorrhea, erectile dysfunction, and reduced libido have also been reported. Muscle pain or joint pain may occur rarely, with severe cases leading to rhabdomyolysis, so caution is advised. Cutaneous adverse reactions such as skin rash, alopecia, glossitis, and itching may also be present. This medication should not be used long-term, and if it does not provide therapeutic effects, a switch to another medication is advisable. In elderly patients or those with chronic lung diseases, diabetes, or immune compromise, the risk of pneumonia may be increased, so caution is necessary. If dizziness or drowsiness is experienced while on this medication, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. This medication may interact with other drugs, necessitating dosage adjustments or discontinuation of co-administered medications. Consultation with a specialist is particularly important when taken with anticoagulants or certain antibiotics, or anticonvulsants. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication, and its safety in children has not been established, so its use is not recommended. In case of overdose, emergency treatments such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and in severe cases, hemodialysis may be required. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion, which may promote bacterial growth in the stomach, so regular check-ups including eye examinations are necessary during prolonged use.
