It aids in conditions related to vitamin C deficiency or metabolic disorders, such as capillary bleeding and in promoting bone matrix formation and bone union during fractures. Additionally, it is used for the treatment of pigmentation such as freckles and solar dermatitis. Overall, this medication improves various symptoms and conditions related to vitamin C deficiency.
As ascorbic acid, administer 50 to 1,000 mg daily in one or multiple divided doses by subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intravenous injection. Adjust dosage appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this medication or its components. It should also not be administered to patients with conditions such as hyperoxaluria, which is characterized by excessive excretion of oxalate in urine, or to patients with thalassemia. Patients with gout or cystinuria should also avoid using this medication, and precautions should be taken in patients with Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency as hemolysis may occur with high-dose administration. Patients with oxalate stones in the kidneys should not receive more than 1 gram per day. Side effects may occur including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing of the face, headache, and insomnia while taking this medication. In particular, taking more than 1 gram per day may acidify the urine and increase the risk of diarrhea or kidney stones. Caution should be exercised when taking more than 600 mg as diuretic effects may occur. Excessive intake can lead to diarrhea or kidney stones, hence the prescribed dosage should be adhered to. This medication is primarily taken orally, but it can also be administered by injection in cases of gastrointestinal absorption disorders or when oral administration is not feasible. Injection may cause pain at the injection site and should avoid the area around nerve pathways using the minimal dose possible. If injected too quickly, dizziness or phlebitis may occur, and hence it should be administered slowly. This medication may interact with other medications; caution is needed when taken in conjunction with aspirin, iron preparations, certain antibiotics, anticonvulsants, or oral contraceptives. During pregnancy, its safety for the fetus is not clearly established so it should only be used when essential, and high-dose usage should be avoided. This medication may be passed into breast milk, but at normal dosages, significant risks to the baby have not been reported. This medication may affect the results of certain clinical tests, so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider of its usage prior to tests. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children, away from direct sunlight, in a dry place. It should be kept in its original container to prevent misuse or degradation in quality.
