Treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers; treatment of esophagitis and reflux symptoms; improvement of gastric lesions
This medication is effective in treating active gastric and duodenal ulcers and preventing the recurrence of duodenal ulcers. It is also used to alleviate heartburn caused by erosive and ulcerative esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy, as well as reflux esophagitis. It aids in improving lesions such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling of the gastric mucosa that occur during acute exacerbations of acute and chronic gastritis. It is used for symptomatic relief and treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases.
1. Treatment of active gastric or duodenal ulcers Adults: Administer 300mg of nizatidine once daily at bedtime, or 150mg twice daily, in the morning and evening, by mouth. Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks, but treatment may be continued for up to 8 weeks if necessary. In cases of active gastric ulcers, malignancy must be ruled out before treatment. 2. Prevention of duodenal ulcer recurrence Adults: After healing of a duodenal ulcer, administer 150mg by mouth once daily at bedtime. Treatment may be continued for up to 1 year; results of longer-term treatment are not known. 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease Adults: Administer 150mg by mouth twice daily, in the morning and evening. Treatment may be continued for up to 12 weeks. 4. Improvement of gastric mucosal lesions Adults: Administer 150mg by mouth twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 weeks. 5. Dosage adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment Dosage for patients with renal impairment should be adjusted by reducing the dose as follows. Active duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), benign gastric ulcer Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: 150mg daily Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: 150mg every other day Maintenance therapy Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: 150mg every other day Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: 150mg every 3 days Some elderly patients may have a creatinine clearance below 50mL/min. Based on pharmacokinetic data in patients with renal impairment, the dosage should also be reduced in these patients according to the degree of renal impairment. The clinical impact of this dosage reduction in patients with renal impairment has not been evaluated.
This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to H2-receptor antagonists. Particularly, individuals who have had allergic reactions to similar medications must inform their healthcare provider before administration. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with a history of drug allergic reactions, liver dysfunction, or impaired kidney function. In cases of poor kidney function, the drug concentration may increase, necessitating a reduction in dosage or an extension of the dosing interval. If any allergic symptoms such as rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur during administration, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a physician. Blood-related issues such as anemia, changes in white blood cell counts, or thrombocytopenia may occur, so report any abnormal symptoms to healthcare professionals. Gastrointestinal effects such as constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, and nausea may arise, so caution should be observed. Increased liver function test results or rare reports of hepatitis and jaundice have been observed, so greater caution is warranted in patients with liver health issues. Central nervous system symptoms, such as confusion, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and weakness may rarely occur, and there have been reports of convulsions, so notify healthcare providers in case of abnormal symptoms. Irregular or rapid heartbeats may present temporarily. Rarely, gynecomastia may occur in females, while erectile dysfunction or decreased libido have been reported in males. Skin-related side effects may include sweating, hives, rash, and skin inflammation. Other reports include hyperuricemia unrelated to gout or kidney stones, fever, chest pain, muscle pain, rhinitis, pharyngitis, and cough. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so confirm that a malignant condition is not present before use. Primarily excreted through the kidneys, dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment. During treatment, it is advisable to regularly conduct blood tests and liver and kidney function tests while using the minimum effective dose; if no effect is observed, consider switching to alternative therapy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Breastfeeding women should take this medication solely when necessary due to the potential excretion into breast milk. The safety and efficacy in children have not been sufficiently established. Elderly individuals may have decreased kidney function, so it is essential to assess kidney function prior to administration, and monitor renal status closely during treatment. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation, and pupil constriction may occur, and clinical tests, supportive care, activated charcoal administration, or gastric lavage should be considered as needed. This medication does not inhibit drug-metabolizing enzymes in the liver, thus decreasing the risk of interactions with other medications; however, co-administration with high doses of aspirin may increase salicylate levels. Note that while taking this drug, false-positive results may occur in urobilinogen tests.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Store this medication in a tightly closed container to prevent exposure to air and moisture. It is advisable to keep it in a cool place, between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.
