View approved original text

This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Initially, it is used when blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, and the patient has no prior experience with diabetes medication. It can also replace the use of metformin or sitagliptin when blood sugar control is insufficient with these drugs alone or in combination. If blood sugar control is still inadequate with metformin in conjunction with sulfonylurea or in conjunction with thiazolidinedione, this medication can be added. Lastly, it may also be used when there is inadequate effect with insulin and metformin therapy. In other words, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in conjunction with various existing treatments.
