Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension and is particularly effective in treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. It helps control blood pressure and prevents deterioration of kidney function. Therefore, it is used to treat hypertension and kidney disease associated with diabetes.
This medication can be taken regardless of meal times, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. For hypertension treatment, an initial and maintenance dose of 50 mg of Losartan Potassium is recommended to be taken orally once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dose can be increased to 100 mg once daily or divided into two doses per day. For kidney disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, 50 mg once daily is prescribed, and depending on blood pressure, it can be adjusted to 100 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents over 6 years of age, the dosage varies according to weight. For patients weighing 20 kg to less than 50 kg, 25 mg once daily is recommended, with the maximum dose being 50 mg.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use it. Patients with severely impaired liver function or certain genetic lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, patients with liver disorders, heart disease, or impaired kidney function should use this medication cautiously and monitor their condition carefully before and after administration. This medication lowers blood pressure, which can lead to symptoms of hypotension or renal failure, so special caution is needed for patients with reduced blood volume or heart failure. During treatment, kidney function and electrolyte status should be monitored regularly through blood tests, and due to the risk of hyperkalemia, it should not be combined with potassium supplements or medications that contain potassium. This medication may rarely cause allergic reactions or side effects such as angioedema, hepatitis, myalgia, dry cough, etc., so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. Interactions may occur when this medication is taken with other antihypertensives or certain drugs, so patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medications they are taking. If pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, this medication should be avoided, and consultation with a physician is necessary. If it must be taken, breastfeeding should be discontinued. Children, especially those under 6 years of age or those with significantly impaired kidney function, should not use this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms of hypotension and bradycardia may occur, thus strict adherence to the dosage isrequired, and healthcare institutions should be visited immediately if any unusual symptoms arise. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and it is safer not to transfer it to another container.
