Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that requires restriction of phenylalanine, as it is broken down into a substance called phenylalanine in the body. Additionally, in patients who are congenitally unable to properly metabolize branched-chain amino acids, administration of this drug may lead to severe side effects such as seizures or difficulty breathing, so it should not be used. Occasionally, symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal distension, discomfort, and vomiting may occur in the gastrointestinal tract while taking this medication; in such cases, it is advisable to reduce the dose or temporarily discontinue use. It may affect kidney function and cause an increase in blood BUN levels, so if there are any issues with kidney function, the dosage of the medication should be adjusted. A metabolic disorder that causes elevated blood ammonia levels may occur, and if such symptoms arise, the dosage should be reduced or stopped. This medication is not effective and may be dangerous for patients with severely impaired liver function, especially those with severe hepatic encephalopathy or high total bilirubin levels; therefore, it should not be administered. This drug only contains branched-chain amino acids and does not provide all necessary amino acids, so patients must consume sufficient protein and calories through diet, and extra caution is warranted in cases requiring protein restriction. Long-term excessive administration may worsen nutritional status, so dosage and duration should be managed carefully. If hypoalbuminemia does not improve after taking it for more than 2 months, alternative treatment options should be considered. Elderly patients may experience metabolic disturbances more easily due to decreased physical function, so caution is required when administering the drug. The safety of this medication during pregnancy or lactation has not been established, so it should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Safety in children has not been confirmed, and there is no clinical experience in administering it to children, so it is advisable not to use it in this age group. The medication should be stored out of reach of children, and care should be taken as transferring it to another container may result in accidents or decrease quality. Care should be taken not to exceed the daily intake of aspartame as recommended by WHO, and for an adult weighing 60 kg, it is safe to take a maximum of 2.4g per day.
