Improvement of hypocalcemia (such as tetany) and hyperkalemia
This medication is used to alleviate tetany and related symptoms caused by hypocalcemia. It is also helpful in treating hyperkalemia. Therefore, it is effective for both hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia.
Administer calcium gluconate at a rate of 0.4 to 2 g through intravenous injection at a rate of 0.68 to 1.36 mEq per minute. Adjust appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This medication should be opened carefully when using by children or the elderly, as glass fragments may mix when opening the ampoule. When administering this medication intravenously, it should not be used with another medication called ceftriaxone; if the same infusion equipment must be used, it should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Patients taking cardiac glycosides, those with a history of hypercalcemia or kidney stones, those with kidney diseases, and patients with hypoproteinemia should not be administered this medication. Also, avoid repeated intravenous administration in individuals allergic to this drug or its components, patients with severe renal failure, and children under 18 years. Newborns should not use this drug in conjunction with ceftriaxone, and it is safer not to use separate infusion lines. Patients taking active vitamin D products, those with heart or circulatory diseases, and those at risk for hypercalcemia should use this drug with extra caution. Taking this medication can lead to various side effects such as dyspepsia, nausea, constipation, hypotension, and arrhythmias; therefore, symptoms should be closely monitored. Long-term use may lead to hypercalcemia or kidney stones, so regular blood and urine tests are important. Rapid intravenous administration can cause arrhythmias or fluctuations in blood pressure, so it should be administered slowly. This drug may interact with cardiac glycosides, some muscle relaxants, tetracycline antibiotics, uterotonics, and certain diuretics, so concurrent use should be avoided or used with caution. During pregnancy, it should be administered only in special circumstances, and elderly individuals should use it cautiously due to diminished body functions. In case of overdose, symptoms of hypercalcemia and severe side effects may occur, so it is necessary to stop administration immediately and seek appropriate treatment. This drug is for intravenous use only. Care should be taken to prevent leakage of the drug around the injection site, and it should not be administered to children via scalp veins. Avoid using syringes disinfected with ethanol, and do not use products that have sediment. This drug should not be administered via intramuscular injection, and should not be mixed with other specific components for injection. Finally, this drug should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children.
