How it is given

Adult administration

As Ascorbic Acid, 50 to 1,000 mg is to be injected subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously once or multiple times a day. Dosage should be adjusted appropriately based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, those allergic to this medication or its ingredients, patients with hyperoxaluria who excrete excessive oxalate in urine, patients with thalassemia, gout, cystinuria, and those with Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency should not take this medication. In addition, patients with oxalate stones in the kidneys should not take more than 1 gram per day. Overdose of this medication may cause side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, facial flushing, headache, and insomnia. Especially, taking more than 1 gram per day can acidify the urine, increasing the risk of diarrhea and kidney stones, and doses exceeding 600 milligrams may result in diuretic effects. Caution is advised for patients with G6PD deficiency as hemolytic reactions may occur with high doses. Excessive consumption of this medication can lead to the precipitation of oxalate or other materials in the urinary tract, which may cause stones; it is generally taken orally but is limited to acute situations or when oral intake is difficult if administered as an injection. Moreover, interactions with this medication can occur when taken with salicylates, aspirin, nicotine, alcohol, iron preparations, certain anticonvulsants, oral contraceptives, and some antibiotics, so it is advisable not to take them together. During pregnancy, the safety for the fetus is not fully confirmed, so it should be taken only when the benefits outweigh the risks, and it is preferable to avoid doses exceeding 1 gram. This medication may also be transmitted through breast milk, but it is known to be safe for the baby at normal doses. This medication can affect certain clinical test results, potentially causing misunderstandings during urine glucose tests, hematuria tests, or stool occult blood tests. In case of overdose, symptoms like diarrhea or kidney stones may occur, so if symptoms appear, it is essential to stop taking the medication immediately and seek appropriate treatment. When administered by injection, temporary pain might occur at the injection site, so care should be taken to avoid nerve areas and not to inject repeatedly at the same site, and intravenous administration should be performed slowly. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, and in a dry place. Also, it should be kept in its original container to prevent degradation in quality or misuse.
