This medication is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Additionally, it is administered to prevent Mendelson's syndrome during anesthesia before surgery and is also effective for treating ulcers that may occur after surgery and gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This medicine regulates gastric acid secretion, protecting the gastric mucosa and aiding in ulcer healing. Therefore, it is widely used for symptom improvement and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or those with kidney function problems. In addition, it should not be administered to individuals who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components, patients with a history of acute porphyria, those who have undergone upper gastrointestinal tract surgery, pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, premature infants, and newborns on potassium-restricted diets. Patients with liver function impairment or a history of drug allergies, the elderly, and those with a past history of kidney impairment should use this medication with caution. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, especially the elderly or those with a history of peptic ulcers, should be regularly monitored. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer; therefore, patients with gastric ulcers or those who develop new or altered digestive symptoms over middle age should undergo procedures to rule out malignant conditions before administration. Patients with Helicobacter pylori gastric or duodenal ulcers should undergo bacterial eradication therapy. Special attention is required for severely ill patients in the intensive care unit, those with hypophosphatemia, or those with swallowing difficulties. Rarely, during the use of this medication, severe allergic reactions, blood-related abnormalities, liver dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms, and neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. In particular, if dizziness or drowsiness occurs, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. It is recommended not to use this medication for extended periods, and if there is no therapeutic effect, it should be switched to another medication. Moreover, this medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform medical personnel of any other medications being taken. It is safest for pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, to avoid using this medication. Children should not be given this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been adequately established in this population. In cases of overdose, emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be needed, and blood dialysis may be used to remove the drug if necessary. Finally, this medication reduces gastric acid secretion, which may promote bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, and prolonged use may affect eye health, necessitating an ophthalmological examination.
