Additionally, pancreatitis may occur, which is inflammation of the pancreas; if you experience sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea, you should inform your healthcare provider immediately. Metformin, included in this medication, can cause a rare complication known as lactic acidosis, which occurs when lactic acid accumulates in the body and becomes dangerous; symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, and confusion should prompt you to stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. This medication should not be taken by patients with impaired kidney function, severe infections or dehydration, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, pregnant women, or nursing mothers. Patients with reduced kidney function should especially avoid this medication and undergo regular kidney function tests. If undergoing surgery or tests using iodine contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and resuming should occur only after kidney function is confirmed as normal. During use of this medication, irregular meals, excessive exercise, and interactions with other medications may cause hypoglycemia, so caution is advised. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, cold sweats, tremors, and headaches; if such symptoms occur, immediate intake of sugar is necessary. Moreover, this medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and upper respiratory infections, so if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Elderly patients or those with poor nutritional status, and patients with liver dysfunction should also take special care when using this medication. Finally, abstaining from alcohol consumption during the use of this medication is recommended, and regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney function, and blood tests should be done for safe usage.
