Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist in controlling blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy.
The dosage of this medication is determined considering the patient's treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, without exceeding a range of 100 mg of sitagliptin and 2000 mg of metformin per day. Generally, it is taken twice daily with food, and the dosage should be gradually increased to reduce gastrointestinal side effects caused by metformin. 1. Patients not receiving metformin: The initial dose is 50/500 mg, taking one tablet twice a day.
This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, which help in controlling blood sugar. First, a serious allergic reaction may occur while taking this medication, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Additionally, acute pancreatitis, which is a serious side effect involving inflammation of the pancreas, may occur; if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting persists, visit a hospital. This medication should not be administered to patients with poor kidney function, and regular kidney function tests should be conducted if kidney function declines. Particularly in cases that may affect kidney function, such as dehydration, severe infections, heart problems, or acute myocardial infarction, use should be avoided, and discontinuation should be done for a period before and after surgery. It is safer not to use this medication in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as in nursing mothers. This medication may cause symptoms of hypoglycemia; therefore, caution should be exercised when irregular meals or vigorous exercise occur, and the risk of hypoglycemia may increase when used in combination with other blood glucose-lowering medications. While taking this medication, it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption, especially for those with poor liver function or alcoholism, as a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis may occur. During treatment with this medication, gastrointestinal disturbances, headaches, upper respiratory infections, and lower Vitamin B12 levels may appear, so regular blood tests are recommended. Lastly, if there are other medications being taken concurrently, drug interactions may occur, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals of all medications being used. If any suspicious symptoms appear during treatment, it is important to consult a healthcare professional immediately.
