Treatment for essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication helps control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension, reducing the strain on the heart and blood vessels. It is also applicable for high-risk diabetes patients who have a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack or who show evidence of end-organ damage, and cannot use ACE inhibitors. This medication is effective in reducing the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is used for both blood pressure control and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.
Take telmisartan 40 mg orally once daily with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, it can be increased to 80 mg once daily. Patients with liver impairment should not exceed 40 mg once daily. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, take 80 mg once daily with water.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used in patients with allergies to this medication or its ingredients, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver diseases or biliary excretion disorders, patients with certain hereditary angioedema, or those with severe kidney impairment. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with mild to moderate liver diseases, patients with heart valve diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and renal artery hypertension should use this medication with caution. When taking this medication, various side effects such as infections, blood abnormalities, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, neurological symptoms, heart and vascular problems, respiratory and gastrointestinal issues, liver dysfunction, skin rash, muscle pain, and kidney impairment may occur; if any abnormal symptoms arise, individuals should consult a healthcare professional immediately. Particularly, serious side effects such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, shock, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, requiring careful attention. Patients with impaired kidney function should have serum potassium and creatinine levels regularly checked, and those with reduced blood volume or sodium may be at risk of hypotension; thus, these should be replenished before administration. It is advisable to refrain from taking this medication for 24 hours before surgery. The effect may be increased when used with other antihypertensive agents, and there is a greater risk of worsening kidney function, hyperkalemia, etc. when combined with certain medications; consult a physician. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should avoid taking it or stop breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children under 18 have not been established and are not recommended. Elderly patients should be carefully administered as there is a risk of stroke due to excessive blood pressure lowering. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, and immediate appropriate treatment is required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, should not be transferred to another container, and should be opened just before taking it. This medication contains sorbitol and should not be used by patients with fructose intolerance. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting caused by this medication.
