Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) may become deficient in zinc, therefore zinc supplementation is necessary. Zinc is an important mineral that strengthens immune function and aids in wound healing. Thus, appropriate zinc supplementation through TPN improves nutritional status.
Metabolically stable TPN patients should take 2.5 to 4 mg/day. Adult patients with fluid loss in the small intestine should take an additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (amount of excretion). In acute burn cases, the dosage is 4.5 to 6 mg/day. Dosage adjustments should be made according to doctor's prescriptions based on plasma trace element levels.
For children under 5 years, the dosage is 100 ug/kg/day. For premature infants weighing less than 3 kg, the dosage is 300 ug/kg/day.
This medication should not be administered directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. Direct administration into the peripheral vein may lead to phlebitis and increases the risk of kidney damage due to rapid intravenous injection. The amount of zinc in this preparation is very small, so toxic symptoms are generally rarely observed. When mixing this medication with other nutritional infusions, it is advisable to prepare it in a laminar flow environment to maintain sterility. It is essential to visually check for any precipitation or discoloration before administering non-oral medications. Zinc and copper affect each other; therefore, administering zinc may lower plasma copper levels. It is necessary to monitor zinc and copper levels through blood tests at regular intervals. This medication is primarily excreted through the intestines and kidneys, so patients with impaired excretion should consider the possibility of zinc accumulation in the body. When administering this medication to pregnant women or women of childbearing potential, it should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Zinc crosses the placenta and can be found in breast milk, so caution is also needed for breastfeeding women. Excessive intake of zinc can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and coordination difficulties, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. Calcium intake may help reduce zinc toxicity. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is recommended to keep it in a dry state at room temperature in its original packaging. Additionally, since this medication does not contain preservatives, any unused portion must be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent contact with air and it is recommended to be kept at a temperature between 1°C and 30°C. Storing it this way will help maintain the effectiveness of the medication.
