This medication is used for patients with essential hypertension whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled with monotherapy.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended adult dosage is 1 tablet of Valsartan 80 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg once daily, which can be taken with or without food and with a small amount of water. Uses of Valsartan 160 mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg are indicated only if prescribed for blood pressure reduction. For patients with kidney impairment, dosage adjustment is not necessary in cases of mild to moderate impairment.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so if pregnancy is confirmed, this treatment must be stopped immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity to any ingredient in this medication or to sulfonamide drugs, or who have experienced such reactions in the past, should not take this medication. Patients with severe liver disease, cholestatic liver cirrhosis, biliary obstruction, or severe kidney disease should also avoid this medication. Additionally, patients with electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia, decreased kidney function, anuria, or certain types of angioedema should avoid taking this medication. Electrolyte changes, kidney impairment, liver impairment, systemic lupus erythematosus, acute angle-closure glaucoma, cerebrovascular disorders, elderly patients, or patients with heart failure should use this medication with caution and monitor blood pressure and kidney function regularly. This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Do not take potassium supplements or potassium-containing medications without consulting a doctor, and it should not be used in patients with renal artery stenosis. The diuretic component in this medication may cause hypokalemia and hyponatremia; therefore, regular monitoring of serum electrolyte levels is necessary. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, and electrolyte disturbances may occur, so immediate medical attention is required. Additionally, this medication may cause photosensitivity, so excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays should be avoided, and if skin changes occur, consult a doctor immediately. There could be interactions with other medications being taken while on this drug, so inform the healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking, especially when combined with lithium, NSAIDs, or potassium-sparing diuretics. Lastly, for child safety, store this medication out of reach of children and keep it in its original container away from moisture.
