Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) require zinc supplementation to prevent zinc deficiency in the body and maintain normal metabolic function. Zinc plays an important role in wound healing and immune function; therefore, adequate zinc supply helps improve overall health status. Thus, zinc is appropriately supplemented during TPN to optimize nutritional status.
Use according to doctor's prescription while checking plasma trace element levels for dosage adjustment guidance. Stable metabolic TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day. Adult patients with fluid loss in the small intestine: additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion amount). Acute burn state: 4.5 to 6 mg/day.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This drug must not be administered directly into peripheral veins without dilution. Direct administration may cause phlebitis or damage to the kidneys by zinc. The amount of zinc contained in this drug is very small, so toxic symptoms generally do not appear. When mixing this drug with other nutritional solutions, it is recommended to prepare in an aseptic environment. Before injection, visually verify if there are any precipitates or discoloration. Administering zinc together with copper may lower the blood copper concentration, so the levels should be checked through blood tests. This drug is excreted through the small intestine and kidneys, so patients with issues in these organs may accumulate zinc in the body. The safety of this drug in pregnant or nursing women is not certain, so it should be used only when the therapeutic benefit outweighs the risk. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk, so caution is advised. Excessive zinc intake can lead to severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, and abdominal pain, so it should be handled carefully. Calcium intake can prevent some toxicity from excessive zinc. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and should be stored in a dry place at room temperature. Since it does not contain preservatives, unused medication should be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
