Summary

Main use
Improvement of gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastritis (gastrointestinal disorders), prevention of Mendelson's syndrome
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Generally, taken orally without regard to meals at a dose of 2 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bed. 1) For gastric and duodenal ulcers, 2 tablets can be administered twice daily or 4 tablets once daily before bed. Particularly for patients with duodenal ulcers, administering 4 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bed can achieve a higher treatment rate. For ulcers caused by NSAID administration or long-term use of NSAIDs, the same dose should be used as a combination therapy to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers. Typically, diseases due to NSAID use heal within 8 weeks; however, healing times may occasionally be extended depending on the patient. For patients with recurrent ulcers who have shown excellent results with short-term therapy of this medication, maintenance therapy of 2 tablets once daily before bedtime is recommended. 2) For gastroesophageal reflux disease, administer 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks or 4 tablets once daily before bed. However, for patients with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dose may be increased to 4 tablets 4 times a day. 3) For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, treatment should start with an initial dose of 2 tablets three times a day and may be increased as necessary. In severe cases, 6 g per day as ranitidine may be given under a physician's directive. 4) For peptic ulcers, acute stress ulcers, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute gastric mucosal lesions, once orally feasible, switch from injection to oral administration at a dose of 2 tablets twice daily. 5) Preoperative administration (prevention of Mendelson's syndrome) involves positioning 2 tablets two hours before anesthesia induction. In this case, it is also beneficial to take 2 tablets the night before surgery.

This medication is used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other gastrointestinal disorders. It is particularly helpful in treating ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is also used to prevent ulcers after surgery and to prevent Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia. This medication regulates gastric acid secretion to protect the stomach lining and promote ulcer healing. Therefore, it improves gastrointestinal health and is used for the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with significantly impaired renal function or those undergoing dialysis. It should also not be administered to patients who have had an allergic reaction to this drug or its components. Patients with acute porphyria, a rare disease, should be careful as symptoms may worsen with this medication. Administration should be avoided in patients with poor renal function, who have undergone gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, premature infants or newborns, and patients following dietary restrictions that limit potassium intake. Patients with liver dysfunction, a history of drug allergies, the elderly, and those with previous kidney issues should be cautious when using this medication. Special care is required when taken with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and elderly patients with a history of peptic ulcers need regular monitoring. This medication can mask symptoms of stomach cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or those newly experiencing indigestion symptoms who are over middle age should confirm that there is no malignant disease before using. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection causing gastritis or ulcers must undergo therapy to eradicate the bacteria. Serious patients in intensive care units or patients with low levels of phosphate in their bodies, and those who have difficulty swallowing, should also be cautious with this medication. Rarely, serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may occur during treatment, and if symptoms arise, administration should be stopped immediately and medical attention sought. Cutaneous rashes, urticaria, and respiratory distress may occur, and in such cases, medication should also be discontinued. Abnormalities in blood tests might be observed, so if symptoms like general malaise, bleeding, or fever occur, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately. If liver dysfunction symptoms or jaundice appear, use should be stopped right away. Circulatory system abnormalities like cardiac arrhythmias or vasculitis have also been reported very rarely. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may occur, and stool color may change, but in most cases, treatment is not necessary. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and seizures may appear, so caution is required, especially for patients with reduced kidney function. Rarely, hormone-related symptoms such as gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction have been reported. If muscle pain or joint pain occurs, it is essential to consult healthcare professionals, and skin rashes or hair loss may also occur infrequently. It is advisable not to use this medication for a long time, and if there is no therapeutic effect, switching to another drug is recommended. Blood tests and regular examinations of liver and kidney function should be performed periodically to monitor for abnormalities. The elderly, patients with chronic lung diseases, diabetes, and those with weakened immune systems may have an increased risk of pneumonia, requiring caution. If dizziness or drowsiness is experienced during use, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medications you are currently taking. Especially when taking medications that affect blood coagulation, careful monitoring through blood tests is essential. Additionally, some antibiotics or anticonvulsants used concurrently can affect absorption, so dosing intervals may need to be adjusted. It is safest for pregnant or potentially pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to avoid this medication. Safety and efficacy in children have not been sufficiently established, so its use is not recommended. In cases of overdose, emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and in some instances, blood dialysis may be required. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion, which can lead to an increase in gastric bacteria if used for extended periods, so regular evaluations, including ocular examinations, may be needed during prolonged use.
