This medication is used for essential hypertension and heart failure, particularly in heart failure patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. It also helps to reduce the risk of death in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or systolic dysfunction after myocardial infarction. Thus, it is effectively used for hypertension management, heart failure treatment, and prevention of complications after myocardial infarction.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Essential Hypertension - Adults: The recommended oral dose is 80 mg once daily as valsartan. - If blood pressure is not well controlled, it can be increased to 160 mg daily or combined with a diuretic, with a maximum increase up to 320 mg daily. 2. Heart Failure - The starting dose is recommended to be 40 mg orally twice daily. - It can be increased to 80 mg or 160 mg per dose.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are allergic to this medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and patients with certain hereditary angioedema should not take this medication. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with mildly impaired liver function, and patients with heart valve disease or myocardial disease should take this medication with caution, ensuring that blood pressure does not drop too low. When taking this medication, side effects like dizziness, fatigue, cough, and diarrhea may occur, and rarely severe allergic reactions, renal dysfunction, or blood abnormalities can happen; therefore, upon occurrence of these symptoms, it is essential to consult a physician immediately. In particular, patients with heart failure or post-myocardial infarction should take this medication while periodically checking renal function and blood pressure, and caution is required as the risk of side effects may increase when combined with other antihypertensive medications or certain diuretics. This medication can increase potassium levels, so if taken with potassium supplements or drugs high in potassium, monitoring blood potassium levels closely is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding should be avoided or breastfeeding should be discontinued if taking this medication. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established; therefore it is advisable not to use.
