Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastritis.
This medicine is used for various gastrointestinal disorders including gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective for the prevention of Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia and for the treatment of ulcers after surgery. This medicine is utilized for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). By regulating gastric acid secretion, it helps alleviate symptoms and promote healing. These properties make it useful for improving symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders.
Typically taken orally, 2 tablets twice daily before breakfast and bedtime, irrespective of meals. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: 2 tablets twice daily or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. Notably, for patients with duodenal ulcers, administering 4 tablets twice daily before breakfast and bedtime leads to a higher treatment rate. Combination therapy to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use or long-term administration utilizes the same dosage. Usually, conditions due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use heal within 8 weeks, although healing times can occasionally be extended for certain patients. For patients with recurrent ulcers that have shown excellent results with short-term therapy, maintaining therapy at a dose of 2 tablets once daily before bedtime is advised. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: Administer 2 tablets twice daily or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime for 8 weeks. For severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dose may be increased to 4 tablets four times daily. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Start treatment at an initial dose of 2 tablets three times daily, with the option to increase as needed. In severe cases, following physician's directions, up to 6 g of ranitidine per day may be administered. 4) Peptic ulcers, acute stress ulcers, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute mucosal lesions: Upon transitioning from injectable to oral administration, take 2 tablets twice daily. 5) Preoperative dosing (to prevent Mendelson's syndrome): Administer 2 tablets 2 hours before anesthesia induction. It is also beneficial to take 2 tablets on the night before surgery.
This medicine should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function or those undergoing dialysis. Individuals who have had allergic reactions to this medication should not take it. Patients with the rare condition of acute porphyria should avoid this medication as it may exacerbate symptoms. It should not be administered to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nor to premature infants or newborns. Patients on potassium-restricted diets should also refrain from using this medication. Patients with poor liver function or a history of drug allergies should use this medication with caution. Elderly patients or those with kidney issues should also be administered this drug cautiously. Patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should have periodic monitoring. As this medication may obscure symptoms of gastric cancer, patients with gastric ulcers or newly developed dyspepsia who are middle-aged or older should be evaluated for malignancy before treatment. Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori require bacterial eradication treatment. Extreme caution is required for critically ill patients in intensive care, patients with hypophosphatemia, or those with swallowing difficulties. Rarely, allergic reactions or shock may occur when taking this medication; if any unusual symptoms appear, discontinue immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Blood cell counts may decrease or liver function may become abnormal; therefore, if symptoms occur, testing should be conducted, and the use of the drug should be stopped. Be vigilant for cardiovascular irregularities, gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness or drowsiness, and mental confusion. Symptoms such as muscle pain or skin rash have also been reported, and should be communicated to a healthcare professional. Long-term use is not recommended, and the minimal effective dose should be used while monitoring treatment outcomes. Elderly patients or those with chronic diseases may be at increased risk of pneumonia, necessitating careful monitoring. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs during treatment, avoid operating vehicles or hazardous machinery. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers about any concurrent medications. In particular, adjustments in dosing intervals or monitoring may be needed for some antibiotics or anticoagulants. It is safe to refrain from this medication for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Safety in children has not been thoroughly established, so it is advisable to avoid use in pediatrics. Overdose may require emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage, so proceed with caution. This medication can reduce gastric acid secretion, potentially promoting bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, necessitating possible ophthalmologic examination with long-term use.
