This medication is used to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It serves as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy and can be used as monotherapy initially. If there has been no prior experience with other diabetes medications and blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it can be administered in combination with metformin. Additionally, if adequate blood sugar control cannot be achieved with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin monotherapy, this medication can be used in combination. If blood sugar control is still difficult with combination therapy, this medication can be used in combination with several drugs to improve blood sugar control. Overall, this medication is used to enhance blood sugar control in various situations.

How to take

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as rash or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. While taking this medication, inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, may occur, so it is essential to inform healthcare personnel if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting arise. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication, and individuals with severe allergies to the medication or its components should avoid its use. In cases of poor kidney function, dosage adjustment of this medication is required, so patients with kidney diseases must consult a doctor. This medication can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes treatments, but special care should be taken to recognize hypoglycemic symptoms, especially when used with drugs that can cause hypoglycemia, such as insulin or sulfonylureas. In clinical trials, side effects such as headaches, upper respiratory infections, rhinitis, and diarrhea have been reported; thus, if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform a doctor. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women, and nursing mothers should also avoid its use. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so regular kidney function assessments are necessary before and after the use of this medication.
