Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone to patients starting diabetes treatment, and when blood sugar control is inadequate with monotherapy, it can be used in conjunction with metformin. Additionally, for patients already using sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin alone but not achieving sufficient blood sugar control, this medication can be combined to enhance therapeutic effects. If blood sugar control remains challenging despite combining with metformin and other diabetes medications, this medication can also be added. It helps manage blood sugar effectively in this variety of treatment regimens.

However, serious allergic reactions may occur while taking this medication; therefore, if symptoms such as a skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or lips occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Furthermore, this medication may cause pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea appear, you must inform your healthcare provider immediately. This medication should not be taken by patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those allergic to this medication or any component of it. Patients with reduced kidney function may require dosage adjustment, and regular kidney function testing before and after administration is important. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is combined with other diabetes treatments, so dosage adjustments may be necessary if taken with insulin or sulfonylureas. It is advisable for women who are pregnant or nursing to avoid using this medication, and safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established. Caution is advised for the elderly due to the potential for decreased kidney function, and regular kidney function tests are recommended. In cases of overdose, general treatment should be initiated, and some can be removed via hemodialysis; therefore, follow the instructions of medical personnel. Inform your doctor immediately if skin blisters or sores occur during treatment, and consider discontinuing the medication if severe joint pain develops.
