View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to aid blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can also be administered as monotherapy, and in cases where monotherapy alone does not achieve sufficient blood sugar control without prior experience with diabetes medication, it may be used together with metformin. Additionally, this medication is combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin when blood sugar control is not well managed with these monotherapies. Furthermore, this medication can be added for combination therapy in situations where adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with various drug combinations. It is used to improve blood sugar control tailored to these diverse circumstances.

Precautions

This medication may very rarely cause severe allergic reactions after administration; hence, if symptoms like skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, usage should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. There are reports of a serious side effect called acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting manifest, immediate medical attention is required. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication, nor should anyone who is allergic to this drug or its ingredients. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dosage adjustments; therefore, those with kidney disease should inform their doctor. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur when using this medication, particularly when taken together with insulin or sulfonylureas, so blood sugar levels should be checked frequently and hypoglycemic symptoms should be monitored closely. Rarely, side effects such as arthralgia or the formation of blisters on the skin have been reported; if such symptoms occur, immediate communication with healthcare personnel is necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised against using this medication, and safety has not been established for children under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney function, so it is important to have kidney function tests before taking this medication and to regularly check kidney status during use. In the case of overdose, while standard treatment is generally applied, dialysis may be performed if necessary to remove the medication, so caution should be exercised to avoid exceeding the recommended dose. Finally, this medication may interact with other diabetes treatments or certain medications; thus, all currently taken medications should be disclosed to a doctor and used according to their guidance.
