This medication is used for ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, and conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome associated with excessive gastric acid secretion. It also aids in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, prevention of Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia, and prevention of postoperative ulcers. It is effective for treating gastric and duodenal ulcers induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to alleviate and prevent symptoms of various gastrointestinal disorders.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically administered orally, regardless of meals, at a dose of 2 tablets twice a day in the morning and before bed. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers Administer 2 tablets twice a day or 4 tablets once a day before bedtime. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux Administer 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks, or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Start with 2 tablets three times a day as the initial dose for treatment.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients receiving dialysis treatment. Patients with a history of allergy to this medication or its components should also avoid taking it. Patients with a rare blood disorder known as acute porphyria should not use this medication. Patients with impaired renal function should not take this medication. Patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery should avoid using this medication as well. It is advisable for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant not to take this medication. This medication should not be administered to premature infants and newborns. Patients on potassium-restricted diets should exercise caution when taking this medication. Patients with liver function issues should use this medication carefully, and those with a history of allergies should take it with caution. Elderly patients and those with a history of renal dysfunction should use this medication with care. If taken with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, especially in elderly patients or those with a history of peptic ulcers, regular check-ups are necessary. This medication may mask the symptoms of stomach cancer; therefore, it should only be administered after confirming the malignancy in middle-aged or older patients with newly developed or changed dyspeptic symptoms. Patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers who have Helicobacter pylori infection should undergo bacterial eradication treatment in conjunction with this medication. Severely ill patients or those in intensive care units should be cautious, as this medication may lead to the development of bezoars. Patients with hypophosphatemia should be careful, as the aluminum component of this medication could interfere with phosphate absorption. Patients who have difficulty swallowing should take care as respiratory complications may arise after taking this medication. When using this medication, very rarely can allergic reactions lead to shocks; thus, if unusual symptoms appear, administration should be immediately halted and healthcare personnel notified. Allergic reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, fever, and bronchospasm may rarely occur, and administration should be discontinued if such symptoms arise. Abnormalities may appear in blood tests; hence, if symptoms like systemic fatigue, bleeding, and fever occur, immediate consultation with healthcare personnel is warranted. Liver function abnormalities may appear very rarely; if jaundice or hepatitis symptoms occur, this medication should be discontinued. Cardiac arrhythmias or vasculitis have been reported very rarely, so caution is required if cardiac-related symptoms appear. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may appear very rarely. Neurologic symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, and insomnia may occur very rarely; if such symptoms develop, consultation with healthcare personnel is advised. Myalgia or arthralgia may occur very rarely, and in severe cases, administration should be immediately halted. Skin rash or hair loss may rarely occur. Long-term use is not recommended, and it should be used at the minimum dose while closely monitoring the treatment progress. Elderly patients, those with chronic lung disease, diabetic patients, or immunocompromised patients may have an increased risk of pneumonia following use of this medication, so caution is necessary. If dizziness or drowsiness is experienced while taking this medication, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. There may be interactions with other drugs, so it is important to consult with healthcare personnel, especially when taken with anticoagulants or certain antibiotics. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication. The safety of this medication in children has not been established, so its use is not recommended. In case of overdose, treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, therefore, it is important to take care not to exceed the recommended dosage.
