Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy and may be used in combination with metformin if achieving sufficient blood sugar control with monotherapy is difficult for patients who have never received diabetes medication treatment before. Additionally, this medication can be administered in conjunction with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin when blood sugar control is inadequate with monotherapy. It can also enhance treatment effectiveness by adding this medication when blood sugar control is difficult with multiple-drug combination therapy. This medication effectively improves blood sugar control when used in various combination therapies.

How to take

Adult dose

For monotherapy or combination therapy, administer 100 mg once daily, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. For patients with kidney impairment, dose adjustment is required based on renal function. No dose adjustment is necessary for mild renal impairment. For moderate renal impairment (glomerular filtration rate of 30–45 mL/min/1.73 m2), administer 50 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Acute pancreatitis, a serious pancreatic disease, may occur, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting appear while taking this medication, immediate medical attention should be sought. It should not be used by patients with type 1 diabetes or those who have hypersensitivity reactions to this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function must adjust the dosage of this medication and take it according to the doctor’s instructions. Cold symptoms, headaches, or digestive disorders may occur while taking this medication; if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when taken with other hypoglycemic agents, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, so regular blood sugar checks and dose adjustments may be necessary. If symptoms such as severe joint pain or blistering of the skin occur, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention from a specialist. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and safety in children under 18 years has not been established. In older adults, renal function may decline, so regular kidney function tests before and after use are recommended, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical care for appropriate treatment, as this medication can be partially removed by hemodialysis. Due to potential interactions with other medications, be sure to inform healthcare providers of any medications currently being taken.
