View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Initially, this medication may be administered alone. If blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy, it may be combined with metformin. Additionally, this medication can be added if there is inadequate effect from monotherapy with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. This medication can improve blood sugar control even if multiple types of diabetes treatments are required.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered once daily at a dose of 100 mg as monotherapy or in combination therapy, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. In patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment is necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment (glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] 45-90 mL/min/1.73 m2), no dose adjustment is necessary. For glomerular filtration rates of 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m2, administer 50 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious allergic reactions; therefore, if symptoms like skin rash or difficulty breathing occur within 3 months of administration, use should be discontinued immediately. There is a risk of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so if abdominal pain or vomiting occurs during treatment, the doctor should be informed immediately. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. In patients with impaired kidney function, the dose should be adjusted and administered cautiously. Cold-like upper respiratory infections, headaches, and symptoms like rhinitis may occur during treatment. Be cautious as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase when combined with other blood sugar-lowering agents, particularly insulin or sulfonylureas. Severe joint pain or blistering conditions resembling dermatitis herpetiformis may occur, and if such symptoms arise, consult a doctor immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication, and safety in children or adolescents under the age of 18 has not been established. In elderly patients, kidney function may decline, so dose adjustment and kidney function monitoring are necessary. In cases of overdose, general symptomatic treatment should be conducted, and if necessary, some medications can be removed by dialysis. This medication has relatively low interactions with other drugs; however, caution may be needed when used in conjunction with certain medications, so consult a doctor or pharmacist.
