Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used for the treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes, especially those who are overweight, when blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone. It is effective as monotherapy, but if necessary, it can be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to assist in blood sugar management. This helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and achieve positive effects in diabetes treatment.
The initial dose is 500 mg of metformin hydrochloride slow release tablet taken once daily with the evening meal. After one week, blood sugar levels should be measured to adjust the dosage, with a maximum dose of 2000 mg per day. The increase in dosage should be by 500 mg weekly, and it can be taken with the evening meal up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily. If blood glucose control is not achieved with 2000 mg once daily, consider 1000 mg taken twice daily with meals.
This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, which can be fatal. Caution is advised when using this drug with other diabetes treatments as severe hypoglycemia can occur. Do not use this medication in patients with moderate to severe renal dysfunction, dehydration, severe infection, acute heart problems, and other such conditions. Especially, the administration of this drug should be suspended before and after tests involving acute heart failure or contrast agents, and should only be resumed after normal kidney function is confirmed. Patients who are allergic to this drug's ingredients, those with type 1 diabetes, or those with severe metabolic acidosis should also not take this medication. Caution is needed for patients with severe infections, serious trauma, before and after surgery, malnutrition, liver dysfunction, severe gastrointestinal disorders, or excessive alcohol consumption; in such cases, temporary cessation of the drug may be warranted. Regular monitoring of kidney function is required during the use of this medication, and drug administration should be discontinued immediately if kidney function deteriorates. Additionally, blood sugar levels should be monitored continuously, and if symptoms of hypoglycemia or suspected lactic acidosis appear, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Gastrointestinal disturbances may frequently occur during initial treatment but typically improve over time. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform medical personnel of any other medications being taken. During pregnancy, it should be used with caution for the health of the fetus and mother; during breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid this medication. Elderly patients are at a higher risk for renal function decline, necessitating dosage adjustments and regular kidney function inspections. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia is unlikely, but the drug can accumulate in the body, requiring immediate treatment. This medication is not recommended for children as its safety and efficacy have not been established. The tablets should not be chewed or crushed, but taken whole, and do not worry if the tablet shell is excreted after administration. When taking this medication, avoid alcohol consumption and maintain regular meals, exercise, and consistent monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function.
