Thioctic acid is used to supply in cases where demand increases due to intense physical labor. It also helps in the treatment of subacute necrotizing encephalomyelitis associated with the rare neurological disorder Leigh syndrome. It is effective for toxic inner ear damage, particularly damage caused by streptomycin and kanamycin, as well as occupational noise-induced hearing loss. However, if no effects are seen after about one month of administration, continued use is not recommended. These characteristics make thioctic acid useful in the treatment of neurological and inner ear disorders.
