Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are following a diet and exercise regimen. It can be administered as monotherapy and is also suitable for patients newly receiving diabetes medication. If sufficient blood sugar control cannot be achieved with monotherapy, it may be combined with metformin. Additionally, this medication can be added when used alone or in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, but blood sugar control remains inadequate. Therefore, this medication helps improve blood sugar control when used in conjunction with various diabetes treatment methods.

Precautions

This medication may rarely cause serious allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after taking it, you should stop taking it immediately and seek medical attention. Furthermore, this medication may cause inflammation of the pancreas, known as acute pancreatitis, during treatment. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, you should visit a medical facility immediately. It should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, and patients who have a hypersensitivity to this medication or its components should avoid taking it. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dose adjustments for this medication, so kidney function tests should be performed before use, and patients should follow their doctor's instructions. Side effects such as upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, headaches, and diarrhea may occur during treatment, and if symptoms persist or worsen, consultation with a physician is recommended. When used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar changes should be closely monitored, and dosage adjustments should be made when necessary. This medication is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and its safety in children and adolescents under 18 years of age has not been established. In elderly patients, kidney function may decline, so it is advisable to regularly monitor kidney function before and during treatment. In case of overdose, general emergency measures should be implemented, and blood dialysis may be used to remove some of the medication, if necessary. This medication tends to have few interactions with other drugs, but it is safe to consult a doctor when taking certain medications. If sudden joint pain or skin blisters occur during treatment, stop taking it immediately and consult a specialist.
