This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone but may also be combined with metformin or other diabetes medications to enhance blood sugar management when existing treatments are insufficient. This medication is added to various combination therapies to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered once daily at a dose of 100 mg for monotherapy or combination therapy, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. This medication can be taken regardless of meals. For patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment is necessary based on the glomerular filtration rate. - Mild and some moderate renal impairment patients do not require dose adjustment. - Patients with a glomerular filtration rate of 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m2 should take 50 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as rash or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. While taking this medication, inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, may occur, so if symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite arise, notify medical personnel promptly. It is advisable not to use this medication in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Those who have experienced severe allergic reactions to this medication or its components should avoid taking it. Patients with impaired kidney function should adjust the dose of this medication, so regular kidney function tests before and during treatment are important. In clinical trials, patients taking this medication may experience side effects such as cold symptoms, headaches, and upper respiratory infections. Additionally, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so it is crucial to monitor blood sugar levels frequently and pay attention to symptoms, especially when taken with insulin or other sulfonylureas. If severe joint pain or blistering symptoms occur while taking this medication, discontinue use immediately and consult medical personnel. It is not safe for pregnant or nursing women to take this medication, and its safety and efficacy in children or adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established. Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, so dose adjustments and kidney function tests are necessary.
