For adults, Polycarbophil Calcium is administered 1,250 mg orally once to four times daily. The recommended initial dose is between 1,250 mg to 2,500 mg per day and can be increased to a maximum of 5,000 mg per day. It should not be taken right before bedtime.

Precautions

This medicine should not be used in patients with allergic reactions or unexplained rectal bleeding. Patients with severe dehydration or difficulty swallowing food should also not take this medicine. Administration should be avoided in patients who are bedridden or at risk of reflux, and those with decreased colonic or bowel function. Caution is necessary as this medication may worsen symptoms in cases of acute abdominal diseases or intestinal obstruction and stenosis. It is better to avoid this medication in patients with hypercalcemia, kidney stones, or severe renal failure. Patients with severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting should also avoid taking this medication. Patients who need to limit calcium intake or those taking active vitamin D preparations should be administered with caution, as there is a risk of hypercalcemia. Caution is necessary for patients taking cardiac glycosides as this medication may enhance the drug effect. Effectiveness may be reduced in patients with achlorhydria, hypochlorhydria, or a history of gastrectomy. Caution is required for patients undergoing dialysis or with mild renal failure, as there is a risk of tissue calcification. If rash or itching occurs while taking this medicine, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation may appear, so careful observation for unusual symptoms is needed. Regular testing may be required as liver function test levels may rise. It should be taken with sufficient water as swallowing without water may risk choking. If chest pain, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing occur, discontinue the medication immediately and consult a specialist. If symptoms do not improve after taking the medication for more than 7 days, stop the medication and consult a physician. During long-term use, closely observe for adverse reactions, and if problems arise, discontinue use immediately. This medication may interfere with the absorption of other drugs while it remains in the intestine, so it should be taken with a minimum interval of 2 hours from other medications. In particular, caution should be exercised when taken with certain antibiotics or antimicrobial agents, as calcium contained in this medicine may reduce drug absorption. The risk of hypercalcemia is heightened when taken with active vitamin D preparations. Combining with calcium supplements may lead to hypercalcemia due to excessive calcium intake, and this medication's efficacy may be reduced. Patients taking cardiac glycosides may experience side effects such as arrhythmias, so it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. When taken with acid secretion inhibitors or antacids, the effectiveness of this medication may be reduced, so dosing intervals should be adjusted. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should be administered this medication only after careful consideration of its therapeutic effects and risks. Safety for use in children has not been fully established, so caution is advised. Elderly patients may have weakened kidney function, making hypercalcemia more likely, so dosage adjustments may be necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and in a cool, dry place at room temperature. If the medicine is removed from its original container and stored in another container, the quality may deteriorate or there is a risk of misuse, so it should be kept in its original container.
