This medication is primarily used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke in patients aged 55 and older who are at high risk, helping to lower the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases. It is especially recommended as an alternative treatment for patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors. It is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Telmisartan should be taken orally once a day at a dose of 40 mg with water, regardless of meals. It may be effective at 20 mg once daily for some patients, and if necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily. Maximum blood pressure-lowering effects are noted 4 to 8 weeks after beginning treatment. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, an oral dose of 80 mg taken once daily with water is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can pose serious risks, particularly to the fetus and newborn if used during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately once pregnancy is confirmed. This medication should not be used by individuals who have had allergic reactions to this drug or its ingredients, pregnant or nursing women, patients with severe liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with diabetes or severe kidney impairment. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, those with mild to moderate liver dysfunction, patients with heart valve disease, patients with cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal disease patients, patients with renal artery hypertension, and those with severe kidney impairment should use this drug cautiously. Various side effects such as infections, anemia, hypersensitivity reactions, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, dizziness, blood pressure drop, breathing difficulties, liver dysfunction, rashes, myalgia, and kidney impairment may occur during the use of this medication, so symptoms should be closely monitored. Especially severe adverse reactions such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, shock, liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, so consult your doctor immediately if any unusual symptoms appear. Patients with kidney impairment or those who have had a kidney transplant should have potassium and creatinine levels checked regularly, and patients with sodium depletion or low blood volume may be at risk of hypotension, so caution is necessary. Combined use with other antihypertensive drugs may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect, so it should be taken according to a doctor's instructions, and it is essential to inform the doctor about any concomitant medications, as there may be drug interactions. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and nursing mothers should avoid it or stop breastfeeding. Safety in children under 18 years of age has not been established, so its use is not recommended.
