Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used alongside dietary therapy and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone at the start of treatment and may be used in combination with metformin when monotherapy does not adequately control blood sugar. Additionally, it is added to treatment regimens when there is insufficient effect from monotherapy with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. It can also be used when blood sugar control is difficult even with complex combination therapy. Therefore, this medication is effectively used in conjunction with various treatment strategies to assist in the management of blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dosage for this medication is 100 mg once daily, whether used alone or in combination therapy, with the maximum daily dosage being 100 mg. Dosage adjustments are necessary based on kidney function. - In cases of mild to moderate kidney impairment (eGFR 45 to <90), no dosage adjustment is needed. - In cases of moderate kidney impairment (eGFR 30 to <45), the dosage is 50 mg once daily. - In cases of severe kidney impairment (eGFR 15 to <30)...
This medication may cause serious allergic reactions in some patients. Such reactions may include anaphylaxis, angioedema, and severe skin rashes or exfoliative skin conditions; therefore, if any of these symptoms occur after taking the medication, it must be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Additionally, this medication can cause a serious side effect known as pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting occur during use, prompt notification to medical personnel is necessary. This drug should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, and those who are hypersensitive to this drug or its components should also avoid using it. For patients with impaired kidney function, dosage adjustment is necessary as this medication is excreted through the kidneys, and regular kidney function testing is important. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when using this medication, especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas; thus, blood sugar should be monitored carefully, and dosage adjustments for other medications can be made as needed. During the course of treatment, side effects such as headaches, upper respiratory infections, pharyngitis, diarrhea, nausea, and dyspepsia may occur, and some patients may experience joint pain or skin blistering diseases, so any symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and the safety and efficacy in children under 18 years of age have not been established. In cases of overdose, general emergency procedures should be followed; this medication can be partially removed through hemodialysis, so hemodialysis should be considered if necessary. Finally, this medication has relatively few interactions with other drugs, but caution may be needed when taken in combination with certain medications, so any other medications being taken should be communicated to healthcare providers.
