This medicine is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's-type dementia symptoms. It helps alleviate memory decline, cognitive function reduction, and behavioral problems caused by dementia, improving the patient's ability to perform daily activities.

How to take

Adult dose

As Donepezil Hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. If bizarre dreams, nightmares, or insomnia occur, consider administering this medication in the morning. For 4-6 weeks, maintain a dosage of 5 mg, and after assessing the clinical response during this period, the dose may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing to 10 mg per day, administer with caution regarding gastrointestinal adverse reactions.

Child dose

There is no experience using this medication in children.

Precautions

This medicine should not be used by individuals who are allergic to certain components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with genetic lactose issues. Patients with heart diseases or those with heart rhythm problems, a history of peptic ulcers, asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease history, and patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should use this medicine with caution. This medication can cause serious side effects such as bradycardia, arrhythmia, exacerbation of peptic ulcers, liver dysfunction, seizures, muscle abnormalities, respiratory distress, acute pancreatitis, and renal failure. Therefore, if any unusual symptoms occur, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is required. Generally, side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, and fatigue may occur, most of which are mild and temporary. This medication can affect the heart, so patients with heart diseases or a history of QT interval prolongation may require an electrocardiogram. It may affect the digestive system, so patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should closely monitor any exacerbation of symptoms. Caution is required while driving or operating machinery, especially during the initial period of medication or when changing doses, as dizziness and fatigue may occur. Certain hepatic metabolic enzymes break down this medication, so it may alter the efficacy when taken with some drugs. Therefore, patients must inform their healthcare provider about all medications they are currently taking. This medication should generally not be used during pregnancy, except in special cases, and breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding during the medication period. Safety in children has not been established, so it should not be used in pediatric patients. In case of overdose, severe vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, and respiratory depression may occur.
