Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it can lower the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, patients who already have coronary artery disease are at a reduced risk of hospitalization due to myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and congestive heart failure. This medication is also used to treat hyperlipidemia, lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly effective as an adjunct to diet in adolescents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is used to improve heart health and control blood lipid levels.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, which may be increased to 20 mg or 40 mg once daily if necessary. The dosage range for this medication is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after initiating therapy and adjusting the dosage accordingly. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia should be administered 10 to 80 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should be made according to the treatment goals at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication carries the risk of muscle abnormalities; therefore, if muscle pain or weakness becomes severe, treatment should be immediately discontinued and medical advice sought. In cases where severe muscle damage or rhabdomyolysis is suspected, medication should be stopped immediately, and extra caution is necessary for patients with impaired kidney function or hypothyroidism. This medication can affect liver function, so it should not be administered to patients with liver disease or abnormal liver enzyme levels, and regular liver function tests are necessary during treatment. Additionally, women who are pregnant or might become pregnant should not take this medication, and proper contraception must be ensured during treatment. This medication is also contraindicated for breastfeeding women and should not be used in children under 10 years of age. This medication may increase blood concentration and side effect risks when taken with specific drugs, so it is essential to inform the physician if other medications are being taken. Special caution is needed when combined with certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments, colchicine, and fibrates. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should be closely monitored for muscle-related side effects. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic, monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels.
