Precautions

This medication aids in controlling blood sugar, but a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis may occur in some patients. This side effect can be particularly risky for those with impaired kidney function or those with heart disease, sepsis, etc. This medication should not be given to patients with moderate to severe impairment of kidney function, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, or sepsis. Additionally, the use of this medication should be temporarily suspended before and after examinations using iodinated contrast agents, and patients with liver dysfunction or pregnant women should avoid its use. When used in conjunction with other medications for diabetes treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so patients should be well-informed about the symptoms of hypoglycemia and may need to adjust dosages of other medications as necessary. During treatment, kidney function and liver function should be regularly monitored to ensure there are no abnormalities, and vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so monitoring is advisable. During this medication, dehydration, severe vomiting or diarrhea, acute infections, and before and after surgery should lead to temporary discontinuation of its use, and if sudden abdominal pain or vomiting occurs, which may suggest pancreatitis, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is important not to overindulge during treatment. Particularly, caution is needed for the elderly or those with reduced kidney function, and patients and families should be adequately informed of symptoms of hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis that may occur with this medication. Finally, this medication has not established safety and efficacy in children, so it is advisable not to use it.
