Treatment of hypertension and renal disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used for the treatment of hypertension and is particularly effective in preventing and treating renal disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood pressure to reduce cardiovascular strain and protect kidney function. Therefore, it is effectively used in managing hypertension and renal disease resulting from diabetes.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. 1. Hypertension - The recommended starting and maintenance dose of losartan potassium is 50 mg taken orally once daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect is achieved 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the same dose can be divided and taken orally twice daily or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily as needed. 2. Patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension
Pediatric and adolescent patients aged 6 years and older - Weight 20 kg or more but less than 50 kg: 25 mg once daily, with a maximum increase to 50 mg once daily depending on blood pressure response. - Weight 50 kg or more: 50 mg once daily, with maximum daily dose determined by blood pressure response.
This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters; therefore, it should be immediately discontinued upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if planning to become pregnant, should consult with a doctor. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver function or certain genetic lactose intolerances. Caution should be exercised in patients with excessively low blood pressure or severely diminished kidney function. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia should have their serum potassium levels monitored periodically while taking this medication. Various side effects such as myalgia, dizziness, cough, dyspepsia may occur, so any abnormal symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Serious allergic reactions like angioedema may also arise; if swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing occurs, immediate treatment is necessary. Taking this medication with other antihypertensives or potassium supplements may dangerously increase potassium levels, so consultation with a physician is essential. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while on this medication, and it is recommended to discontinue use at least 24 hours prior to surgery. This medication is not for use in children, especially those under 6 years of age or those with severely impaired kidney function. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur; thus, caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, blood pressure may drop sharply, and immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, angioedema (which may cause airway obstruction leading to laryngeal and glottic swelling, swelling of the face/lips/pharynx/tongue), severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, oral/ocular mucosal pain, severe skin adverse reactions, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, respiratory symptoms accompanied by coughing and fever, jaundice of skin or eyes
