Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. First, those who are allergic to this drug or any of its ingredients should avoid taking it. It is also recommended that individuals with unexplained rectal bleeding do not use this medication. Patients exhibiting severe dehydration symptoms should avoid taking this drug, and caution is needed if one has a condition that makes swallowing food difficult. It is safest for patients who must remain lying down due to risk of reflux to avoid this drug. Those with severely impaired colon or bowel function should refrain from taking this medication. Patients with acute abdominal conditions, intestinal obstruction, or intestinal stricture should avoid using this medication as it may worsen symptoms. Patients with hypercalcemia or those with a history of kidney stones should also abstain from this drug. Caution is necessary for patients with severe kidney failure, especially if not on dialysis, and it should be avoided in cases of severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. Additionally, those requiring limited calcium intake or currently taking active vitamin D preparations should use it cautiously due to the risk of hypercalcemia. Patients on cardiac glycosides need to be cautious as this medication may enhance the effects of their medicine. Individuals with a history of gastric resection or in a state of low stomach acid may find this drug less effective. Kidney patients who are either on dialysis or have mild kidney issues should also take caution due to the risk of calcium deposition and other side effects. While taking this medication, an allergic reaction such as rash or itching may occur, in which case it should be discontinued immediately. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain may also arise, and liver function tests may indicate elevated levels. Symptoms of intestinal obstruction, edema, headache, or hematuria have also been reported, so it is critical to consult a healthcare professional if any unusual symptoms occur. When taking this medication, it is essential to swallow it with plenty of water; taking it without water may lead to choking or swelling and present risks. If chest pain, breathing difficulties, or difficulty swallowing occurs, stop taking immediately and consult a doctor or pharmacist. This medication is for symptom relief; if symptoms do not improve after 7 days of use, consult a physician. Monitor for adverse reactions if used over a long term. When taking other medications, it is advisable to space them at least 2 hours apart to avoid absorption interference with this drug. In particular, taking it concurrently with tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics can reduce absorption, so caution is necessary. There is a risk of hypercalcemia when used with active vitamin D preparations, so be careful when combining them. Taking it with calcium supplements may result in side effects due to excessive calcium. If a patient is on cardiac glycosides, inform healthcare professionals as there may be risks of arrhythmias. Furthermore, taking it with acid secretion inhibitors or antacids may reduce the effectiveness of this drug. Pregnant women or those who could become pregnant should take this medication only when the benefit outweighs the risk, as its safety is not established. The safety in children has not been fully confirmed, so caution is warranted. Elderly patients have an increased risk of hypercalcemia due to diminished kidney function, thus dosage adjustments may be necessary.
