Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is mainly used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia. It helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular revascularization, angina, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure in adult patients with multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It also has a preventive effect against cardiovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the treatment of hyperlipidemia, it improves the dyslipidemia levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia and is used as an adjunct in cases where sufficient effect cannot be achieved with diet therapy. Particularly, it is effective in lowering total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged between 10 and 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve dyslipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for patients with hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily; if more LDL-cholesterol reduction is needed, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The range of the dosing is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be checked within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment to adjust the dosage. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing range is 10 to 80 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg daily. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
