Summary

Main use
Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily; in cases where more significant reduction in LDL cholesterol is required, starting at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily is permissible. Dosing can range from 10 to 80 mg once daily. The dosage should be individualized based on therapeutic objectives and responses, with lipid levels analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting or adjusting the dosage. Since the treatment goal is to lower LDL cholesterol levels, it is recommended to utilize LDL cholesterol levels during treatment initiation and response evaluation; however, if LDL cholesterol levels cannot be utilized, total cholesterol levels may be used to monitor treatment response. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dose is 10 to 80 mg once daily, administered either in conjunction with other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such treatments are not feasible.
Child dose
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosing may be adjusted appropriately based on therapeutic objectives.

This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Specifically, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in elderly patients, smokers, individuals with hypertension, low HDL cholesterol levels, and adults with a family history. It is also effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in diabetic patients who have cardiovascular risk factors. For patients with existing coronary artery disease, it effectively reduces the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular procedures, hospitalizations due to congestive heart failure, and angina pectoris. Additionally, it is used to decrease total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol in hyperlipidemia patients. It is particularly useful in preventing cardiovascular diseases in pediatric and adult patients with familial hypercholesterolemia.
