This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It particularly reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, for patients with existing heart disease, it lowers the risk of recurrent myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, angina, and hospitalization for congestive heart failure. In hyperlipidemia patients, it effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or dyslipidemia. It is also utilized to improve cholesterol levels in certain hypercholesterolemic pediatric patients. This medication is used for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and improving hyperlipidemia.
