Summary

Main use
Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
The recommended starting dose for hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, but for patients requiring more LDL cholesterol reduction, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosing range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2-4 weeks after therapy initiation and dosage adjustment, and modified accordingly. The treatment goal is to lower LDL cholesterol levels, so it's advisable to utilize LDL levels for evaluating the treatment response. If LDL cholesterol levels cannot be obtained, the total cholesterol levels may be used to monitor the response. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing is 10 to 80 mg once daily, either in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or if such therapies are not possible.
Child dose
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years old) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg daily. The dosing is adjusted according to the individual therapeutic targets.

This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors and individuals with type 2 diabetes, and also decreases the likelihood of cardiac-related issues such as coronary artery interventions or angina. For patients with heart disease, it has been shown to reduce the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, interventions, hospitalizations for congestive heart failure, and angina. Additionally, for patients with hyperlipidemia, it helps lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, and increase HDL cholesterol, thereby improving dyslipidemia. It also serves as an adjunct to reduce cholesterol levels in specific familial hypercholesterolemia in children. This medication is used for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Precautions

This medication may cause muscle-related problems, so if there is severe muscle pain or weakness, or a significant rise in muscle enzyme levels, treatment should be discontinued immediately. Patients with a high risk of muscle damage due to serious infections, surgeries, or trauma should consider temporarily stopping this medication. It may affect liver function, thus should not be administered in patients with liver diseases or elevated liver enzyme levels. It should not be used by pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, children under 10 years old, or patients taking certain medications. Patients with a history of alcohol dependence or liver disease should use this medication cautiously, and those at risk for muscle damage should have their muscle enzyme levels checked prior to treatment. This medication can interact with various drugs, so patients taking other medications must inform their healthcare provider. Special care is required when used alongside certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or immunosuppressants. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or fever occur while taking this medication, consult a physician immediately for evaluation. If symptoms of liver dysfunction appear, such as jaundice, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking this medication, and discontinue use immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to children and the elderly, especially the elderly due to the higher risk of muscle damage requiring close monitoring. There is no specific antidote for overdose; treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme tests should be performed regularly. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container.
