Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis
This medication is used for gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective for disorders associated with excessive gastric acid secretion like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is administered prior to anesthesia to prevent Mendelson's syndrome and helps treat ulcers after surgery. This medication is also used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Thus, it is effective in improving various gastrointestinal-related disorders.
For adults, the usual dosage is 2 tablets orally twice a day, irrespective of meals, taken in the morning and before bedtime. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: 2 tablets taken twice daily or 4 tablets taken once daily before bedtime. Especially for patients with duodenal ulcers, taking 4 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bedtime can yield higher treatment rates. The dosage is the same for preventive combination therapy for ulcer caused by NSAID use or long-term use of NSAIDs. Usually, diseases caused by NSAID use typically heal within 8 weeks, though healing periods may sometimes be extended depending on the patient. For patients with recurrent ulcers, who showed superior effectiveness during short-term therapy, 2 tablets once daily at bedtime can be administered as maintenance therapy. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: Administer 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks, or 4 tablets taken once daily before bedtime. However, for patients with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dosage can be increased to 4 tablets four times a day. 3) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Start treatment with an initial dose of 2 tablets three times a day, and the dosage can be increased as necessary. In severe cases, up to 6 g can be given daily as instructed by a physician. 4) Peptic ulcer, acute stress ulcer, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute gastric mucosal lesions: Once oral administration is possible, switch from injection to oral administration with 2 tablets taken twice daily. 5) Preoperative administration (prevention of Mendelson's syndrome): 2 tablets should be taken 2 hours prior to anesthesia. In this case, taking 2 tablets the night before surgery is also advisable.

Patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori infection require bacterial eradication treatment. Special precautions are needed for critically ill patients or patients with hypophosphatemia and those with swallowing difficulties while using this medication. Side effects such as gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, arthralgia, myalgia, skin rash, and hair loss have been reported. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform medical personnel of any medications being taken, and ensure to separate doses from certain medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this medication, and it is advised not to use it in children as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, emergency treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and blood dialysis may be required if needed.
