Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with essential hypertension whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy with Amlodipine or Olmesartan medoxomil. Essential hypertension is a condition where blood pressure is abnormally high, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases; this medication helps effectively control blood pressure. Amlodipine dilates blood vessels to lower blood pressure, while Olmesartan medoxomil, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, relaxes vessel tension. It is used when adequate blood pressure control is difficult with either component alone, assisting in stabilizing blood pressure. Thus, this medication is a safe and effective treatment option for hypertension.

Patients with allergies to this medication's active ingredients or similar classes of drugs, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, individuals with severe liver disease or heart valve diseases, patients undergoing kidney dialysis, those in shock, and certain diabetic patients should not take this medication. Patients with low blood pressure due to dehydration or salt deficiency, patients at risk of rapidly dropping blood pressure due to sudden vasodilation, individuals with severe heart diseases, patients with compromised kidney function, and those with reduced liver function should use this medication with caution and have their conditions closely monitored at the treatment's onset. Side effects may include dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, swelling, indigestion, skin rash, among others; if symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a doctor. Especially, since potassium levels in the blood can increase, routine blood tests should be carried out to check potassium levels if taken with potassium-containing medications. Women planning pregnancy or who are pregnant are recommended to transition to other treatments with proven safety instead of this medication, and breastfeeding mothers may need to stop breastfeeding or discontinue the medication due to potential adverse reactions in the infant. Safety and efficacy in children or adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established, thus it is not recommended. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney and liver function, so it is advisable to start with a low dose and carefully adjust the dosage. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension and problems with cardiac function may occur due to vasodilation; immediate hospitalization and monitoring of blood pressure and cardiac status are necessary. This medication should be stored in a sealed container, avoiding moisture, heat, and direct sunlight, out of reach of children, and should not be transferred to another container. Additionally, taking this medication with grapefruit juice can increase blood pressure-lowering effects, so it is advisable to avoid. This medication may interact with several other drugs, so if taking other medications, it is essential to notify a doctor or pharmacist.
