Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) require zinc supplementation. This helps prevent zinc deficiency and maintain normal metabolism and immune function. Zinc is essential for wound healing and cell function, so adequate zinc supply during TPN aids in patients' recovery. Therefore, zinc supplementation during TPN is used to improve nutritional status and maintain health.
Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adults with fluid loss from the small intestine: 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or 17.1 mg/kg (excretion rate) additionally Acute burn conditions: 4.5 to 6 mg/day Use as prescribed by a physician, adjusting dosage based on plasma trace element levels.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing under 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This medication should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. Direct injection may cause phlebitis or zinc toxicity that can damage the kidneys. The amount of zinc in this medication is very low, so toxic symptoms are typically rare. When mixing this medication, it is advisable to work under special equipment called laminar flow to maintain aseptic conditions. Before administration, ensure that there are no precipitates or discoloration in the medication by visual inspection. Administering zinc with copper may decrease copper levels in the blood, so it is necessary to periodically monitor the levels of both components. This medication is excreted through the small intestine and kidneys; therefore, patients with problems in these organs should consider the possibility of zinc accumulation in the body. The safety of this medication has not been established in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant; it should only be administered when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk, so pregnant or nursing women should be cautious. Overdose may lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, and abdominal pain, which can be severe and potentially fatal. Administering calcium together may help prevent some of the toxicity of zinc. Store this medication out of reach of children and in a dry area at room temperature.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
