Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status.
It is important to supplement zinc to prevent zinc deficiency in patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Zinc is an essential mineral for immune function and wound healing, and deficiency can occur in TPN patients. Therefore, suitable zinc supplementation improves nutritional status and prevents complications. It is used to support the overall health of patients by supplementing zinc.
Use as directed by a physician while checking the trace element levels in plasma for dosing adjustments. Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adult patients with intestinal fluid loss: an additional 12.2 mg/L (fluid loss amount) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion amount) Acute burn patients: 4.5 to 6 mg/day.
Children under 5 years old: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day.
This medication must be diluted before administration; administering it directly into the peripheral vein can cause phlebitis or kidney damage due to zinc. Toxic symptoms from this drug are rarely observed because the zinc content is very low. When mixing this drug with Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) solutions, it is advisable to work in a laminar airflow environment to maintain sterility. Before administration, visually check that the injectable medication is free from any precipitates or discoloration. Since administration of zinc can decrease copper levels, plasma concentrations of copper and zinc should be regularly checked to inform dosing adjustments. This drug is excreted through the intestines and kidneys; caution is needed in patients with impaired excretory functions as zinc may accumulate in the body. The safety of this drug in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant has not been established; it should only be administered when the therapeutic benefit outweighs the risk. Zinc crosses the placenta and can be present in breast milk; therefore, pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use. In case of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and ataxia may occur, necessitating caution. Calcium intake may help protect against zinc toxicity. Keep out of reach of children and store in a dry place at room temperature in the original packaging. This medication does not contain preservatives, so any unused portion must be disposed of properly.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
